As they walked onwards, Avinneyya was lost in thought.
an experiment...It was created....created, by men, within living memory... and John Angelis does not think that it is natural... what has happened to us would seem far, far stranger now. I do not know what to make of it. He took another bite of his candy bar.
"May I ask you a question, Shima? I would like to know whether the people of this city know of the Temple of the Birds?"

"The Temple of birds? There's a fair few shrines to various nature spirits around the place. Not often to birds though, and usually to a specific bird rather than birds plural. If you mean one specific and famous temple... I'm sorry, I've never heard of one."

"Unless I miss my guess, Avinneyya, I doubt that your Temple is located anywhere near here. Moreover, I doubt that many people even see the mists that connect them."

John thought for a moment.

"The mist boundaries are square, I think. And you don't get squares in nature, do you? Seems as if someone put them there, artificially, I think.

"So, there's a few people wandering around three mile squares of different places and times, and most people don't see it. It's almost like we've been put in a prison or cage."

Shima did not appear to have noticed this bizarre conversation at all. But;

"Look! Here we are - this is the way up to the Academy" she indicated the tower, which now rose in front of them like a red and green triangular thing.

John and party made their way in, and found an elevator. John got in, being very very careful to Mind The Gap.

The dors of the elevator opened, and the passengers disembarked onto a large criclular platform. In the centre, red padded seats with various straps clustered together majestically; around the edge was a crackling blue energy barrier, aginst which a few people were leaning and pointing at theview excitedly.

The crowd contained quite a lot of blue-haired people; however, one in particular, standing nearby with a more ordinary-looking man dressed in grey, looked familar. It was Meirian.
