Striding across the grass on the outskirts of Alcos came a young woman with a mop of reddish dreadlocks, baggy combat trousers, desert boots and a rucksack so large it dwarfed her small, wiry frame. The pot and billy can tied to the rucksack gave her a clanking accompaniment as she walked. She took in the golden towers and the hovering island and murmured, "Oh my."

Sliding the rucksack off her back, she sat down cross-legged, took out a small camping-gas burner and set it on the grass. There was obviously much to see here, and much that could go into the Guide, but the first priority was indisputably coffee.

In the distance were some figures, one in black on a horse. Another appeared to be poking at something in the Mists. Probably a bad idea, Peri mused as she lit the gas and filled her pot with water from a canteen.

She sipped the last of her coffee, rich and strong, from a plastic camping mug and breathed a happy sigh. Suddenly she frowned, as if something had just occurred to her, and peered after the figures heading southward. One was just about to pass into the mists.

"Wouldn't want to miss anything," she thought, then stood up and brushed the bits of grass off her trousers.
