| "Temples..." said Yarrow thoughtfully. "Are there any folks about here who like worshipping Gods then? You know, give them fruits and flowers or mebbe a nice cup o' tea?" |

| "Gods..." Avinneyya murmured. He had nothing against gods, to be honest. They couldn't help what they were. "Yarrow-sama," he started, "There are gods here, are not there? They are connected to what has happened?" |

"Oh, of course - you're a God, arent; you, Yarrow-Sama? You did make this patchwork, after all" interjected Meirian
"Ah - here we are" she added, as they came upon a doorway marked 'Professor Lien Meirian" |

"'s'right." Yarrow agreed, with a slightly shiftly look. "I'm an all powerful and omniscent God."
She looked hopefully at the door Meirian was opening.
"I don't s'pose you have any tea in there, do you dearie? I'm feeling kind of parched." |

Meirian glanced at her, usual ditsy look becoming calculating for a second.
"Omniscient? Then surely, Yarrow-Sama, you know whether or not there is tea in there?" |

"It's a matter of politeness," Yarrow snapped back. "And not lowering meself to use me omniscence for just anything."
She sniffed and then eyed Meirian, Moon and Avinneyya balefully. God or not, she looked decidedly cranky.
"So don't get smart with me, girl. Either serve the tea or I'll be on my way." |

Meirian looked immediately apologetic.
"I'm sorry, Yarrow-Sama - you're right, of course. I'm looking for answers right now, and this whole thing has me more rattled than I'm letting on"
"It's green tea", she added meekly, looking at Yarrow with large puppy dog eyes. |

Mollified, Yarrow patted her arm.
"Well I'm not much about answers, dearie, my stock in trade is the things people don't want rather than the ones they do."
She wheeled her trolley through the open doorway and looked about her for a somewhere to sit.
"Still, where there's a will there's a way, I've always said. Green tea'll be fine. An associate of mine's all about the green tea so I won't take it amiss. Just hold the yak butter, gives me wind, it does." |

"Meirian?" Avinneyya asked, "Might I request a portion of the tea for myself? I have a certain...fondness for the beverage."
As he walked through the door, Avinneyya mulled over something that Yarrow-sama had said. "Are there any folks about here who like worshipping Gods then? You know, give them fruits and flowers or mebbe a nice cup o' tea?"
From a satchel that somehow seemed part of his robes, Avinneyya withdrew several peices of oblong, red-orange fruit.
"I have kumquats if any of you would like them. Yarrow-sama? Moon? Meirian?" he asked. |

Moon accepted a kumquat and bit into it enthusiastically, causing sticky orange juice to dribble down his chin. At the same time he craned his neck in the direction in which tea-making was taking place, in the hope that he might have been counted in for that as well.
This had certainly been a pleasant excursion so far, with interesting people arriving and leaving all the time and a huge spirit of camaraderie seeming to be the order of the day. But with some regret he reminded himself that he did have a job to do here and he'd catch hell if he returned home empty-handed. With this in mind he tapped Meirian on the shoulder.
"Begging pardon, pretty miss, but what you got in mind happening after tea? Only Moon have to get back Trubshawe with zoological report ay ess ay pee, or he in for damn good thwacking..." |

Yarrow accepted the kumquat and held it thoughtfully for a while.
"Kumquat," she mumbled to herself. "Kumquat... Kumquat... Such a pretty name."
Eating the fruit with the same appreciative slurping noises she gave the tea, she liked the juice from her fingers fastideously.
"You're all right, Avinneyya, lad," she announced. "Feel free to come to my shop any time you like. All sorts of merchandise for the discerning customer."
"So, anyway," she looked around brightly. "I can't stay all that long meself. My god-daughter's got a tricky sort of problem and I want to see if there's anything i can do for her... You can each ask me a question, if you like, can't say fairer than that."
"Mebbe I'll even answer them." |

| "I thank you for the honour, Yarrow-sama." Avinneyya said. He sipped his tea slowly and contemplated exactly what to ask the god. |

Meirian made teas for all, bouncing around the small kitchen and making a lot of clatter as she did so.
The living room, which they had entered first before sitting down, contained a three piece suite, a very small TV, and piles and shelves of books, which filled so much space the room became really quite cramped. Meirian slumped down in a spare armchair, her legs curled underneath her, and sipped her tea, trying to work out what to ask. There was so many questions swirling round her head, many flashing through too fast for articulation, that it was impossible to decide on just one to ask. She decided, on the whole, to settle on;
"How can I find out the answers to my questions regarding the pecise nature of this patchwork? In terms of things like; how the patches are anchored together, what the mist is, and so on." |

Yarrow thought. She didn't much like the question, for various reasons, but she didn't want to go back on her word. Suddenly her face brightened and she said:
"The 'zact 'splanation for them things what yer asking about has got a lot of other stuff mixed up in it and it'd take a lot of time to go into the ins and outs of it all. But if yer really interested in finding them things out I figure you'd be best to start with that stone what I gave you before and to go and take it to this big tree and ask the woman what lives there for help. If you do those things and probbly a lot of others as well then things will most likely make more sense than what they does now."
Curiously she had delivered this pronouncement in a sort of sing-song tone, accompanied by an expression of oriental inscrutability. The effect was somewhat spoilt by the snigger at the end and her commenting to herself:
"Always wanted to see how that worked." |
