And you should definitely not let my husband hear you calling me an enchantress, I'm sure he'd be quite beside himself?" Despite herself, Lady Beatrice found herself moved by Loresan's flattery. If he was a bit eccentric, well such things were to be expected among those of their class - her daughter being an obvious case in point. And he did seem eccentric in a pretty harmless sort of way. And very charming with it. And he wasn't exactly the first arristocrat who'd dabbled in the occult either, although if he'd filled Violetta's head with that nonsense .... but anyway, best to make him at his ease, and he was at least interesting company, not at all shifty like that Angelis fellow.

"Well, Loresan, I got here in the usual way. One does one's duty to one's family, as I'm sure you'll understand. Not that I find it unpleasant. I am actually very happy here. But you still haven't told me what it is you're doing in Aldersley. Is there perhaps something I could help you with?"

Loresan fingered the embroidery once again. "So, like any red-blooded wizard, I came here looking for you, of course."

He paused for a moment. "Though you might want to be careful - in the world before this I had an encounter with a nasty little beastie that might do rather unpleasant things to your carpets."

"Now now, Loresan. You surely can't expect me to cave in at the first sign of flattery, can you? It's been a number of years since anyone made any such efforts on my behalf. But it would be rude of me to insist on you revealing your purpose when you so clearly wish to remain a man of mystery.

"As to the cats, I'm sorry if one attacked you, they're nortmally quite docile, and I'm afraid it's a natural consequence of living on a farm that they do tend to get everywhere. The servants have orders to turf them out of the house if they find them here.

"Would you care for a walk in the grounds perhaps. I'm afraid that my husband is off hunting, so he won't be able to receive you properly for a while. You must tell me all about where you come from. How does one get there? What sort of a place is it?"
