As he staggered onwards,(glasses pocketed, hands shielding eyes), Karl felt the fine beads of sand scour his face. Amongst the wailing of the wind, the haunting, far - off chants of Zayshi, he saw nothing beyond the sandclouds...but he heard the voices. They were all talking at once, mostly overlapping him like waves; on occassion, stray phonemes made impact, but little sense : 'If you were to position artillery to the right of the hills...'
'Inhabitants? clearly equine, sir,'
'When'd you last see a person walk in that house?'
'Open, like the Weepers.'
'Now, you reach the Age of Majority'
'Keep Searching. The Worm Comes to an End'
And onwards. Sometimes, stray laughter, sometimes high pitched screams and shanties sung absurdly high reached his ears, and he rushed to cover them (forgetting for a moment to shield his eyes). Thus Karl stumbled on through sand and wind and voices, no longer knowing (nor entirely caring) who he was and where he was going to, but only that he had to GET OUT. |
