The Sergeant quickly realised that the Assistant was right. If this foundry was shipping weapons then there was little he could do about it, but using this pistol he could probably keep on top of it at least.

Licking his lips, he gingerly picked up the pistol by the barrel and said "How does it work? And more importantly how much is it going to cost me? I've only got a few shillings on me."

"That's not a problem sir - foreign money is very valuable here."

Assistant then proceeded to show the man the basics of loading, unloading, firing and cleaning the weapon. This servant must have been something of a specialist - the confident dexterity with which he handled the gun was more reminiscent of a soldier than a domestic servant.

The Sergeant made sure to listen very carefully and try to remember everything that the Assistant said, considering that it could save his life one day.

When the demonstration was over the Sergeant then carefully picked up the pistol and looked down the length of the barrel and then turned to the Assistant and said "I'll take it then. But all I've got is this." The guardsman then reached into his pocket and pulled out a small handful of coins which he proffered to the Assistant in the palm of his hand.

Assistant carefully took the coins and bowed to the sergeant.

"Good day, sir. We look forward to your future custom."

And with that, he left.

The Sergeant watched the assistant go and slowly shook his head. His 'suspicious guardsman' senses were starting to tingle and he was now sure that something was going on. Why had they been so eager to take his money off him? That amount would barely have bout the sergeant a new pair of boots back home, while here it appeared to be enough to afford such a sophisticated piece of weaponry as he now held.

He didn't know what was going on here but he was damned if he wasn't going to find out. Making sure that his pistol was loaded as the assistant himself had shown him earlier, he tucked it into his belt underneath his chainmail He also checked that his short sword was secure before striding out the door.

The Sergeant decided that from what he had heard from the Attendant earlier, those that worked here at the foundry were probably used to high-and-mighty lords doing what they liked, so at this he made sure to put on a confident face and to practically march off in the direction he had seen the Liason go earlier, making sure that he at least looked like he knew what he was doing.

The sergeant's plan proved to be surprisingly effective. None of the servants he passed stopped him. Indeed, those stationed at fixed points even bowed to him as he passed.

Before long he found his way to a very wide flight of stairs leading both up and down. And here he faced a difficulty. The Foundry was huge - his chances of guessing where Liason had gone without any clues seemed remote.

He bit his lip and thought for a second. He was clearly not going to be able to simply find the Liason, he would have to think again.

Turning round from the steps he retreated to the nearest servant he could find and adopting a gruff tone he pointed at the man and said "You! You there!" When he was sure he had the mans attention he said "I'm looking for this Liason fellow. Can I trust you to tell me where he is?"

"Happy to assist, sir." the servant bowed.

Valet: There is a visitor at the North stairway from the Customer Lounges looking for Ambassador Liason.

Liason: I am in the South Wall. Can you escort him to the gate ?

Valet: Yes, certainly.

"Ambassador Liason is, I believe, some distance away - at the South Wall. Perhaps I could escort you there sir ?"

"Let us go then." The Sergeant said to the Valet, who quickly set off at a rather fair pace which the sergeant made a point of keeping up with. It wasn't going to be long before the pair arrived at the Wall and the Sergeant hoped to confront the Liason there.
