The staff bustled about the main room of Jones' Public House. A cold pale light filtered through the leaded glass of the windows but inside tapers and candles burnt brightly around the room.
The long smooth surface of the bar top gleamed softly in the warm light and a fire crackled merrily from the hearth across the room. Long tables with benches made up the bulk of the furnishings but there were tall seats at the bar and soft armchairs beside the fire.
A set of doors separated the public bar from the lobby but through these guests could always be glimpsed entering, leaving umbrellas in the umbrella stand, hangig up coats on the coat rack, shaking dust off their clothes and pushing open the heavy oak doors. From his usual position behind the long bar Jones, or whoever else was tending the bar, was also able to keep a careful eye on the doors leading to the private rooms upstairs or the saloon bar.
Warm steam wafted out of the kitchen, bringing the smell of roast meat into the room, as a maid came out of the door carrying a tray laden with gleaming beer glasses.
