Jane narrowed her eyes at him but she took the pieces of paper. She read the first quickly but the second took her longer and her eyes widened half way through with a look of outrage.
When she finished she was thoughtful for a while and finally said.
"I think it's a trick." She looked back down at the paper lying between them on the window seat.
"This Yarrow person wants you to follow these things to find this Rag and Bone Shop but the directions run out each time. It doesn't mention that you could wander about after these for months and never get there because of the way the world moves about."
"And if it's a God leaving you messages they could probably make it so you just went straight there instead of having to wander about like this. It's all a trick to turn you into a proper hero, the way they want you to be." |

Larkin stared at the girl with incredible disbelief. "This comin from the famous adventurer of course" he said, sarcastically, once she had finished. "The one thats been here an there but has never *actually* left the mist."
Larkin scooped up the letters with his left hand and shoved his knife away with his right. "Well what do you suggest then aye? Miss knows-everythin. Stay here, get old an die?" From his words Larkin sounded almst angry, but he was still leaning forward and staring at her face, only this time it was more of a glare. |

Jane bit her lip, holding back her irritation until he had finished. Her eyes locked with his, returning his glare with a black scowl of annoyance.
"Maybe. If it's the thing they don't want you to do. At least if I'm a puppet, I know I am. You've just let them jerk you around and pull your strings like the rest of those poor saps." She flicked her eyes at the gathered customers; most of whom were now holding drinks and making desultory conversation around the public bar.
She laughed jeeringly. "Hell, you're probably still thinking it's a good thing to have a God take an interest in you." |

Larkin stood up and looked down at the girl, now he was almost shouting "Oh and what a great answer it is. If it wernt fer the fact that I would probably die of bein bored after the first *day* I would go fer it."
Turning and gesturing round the room at the 'poor saps' he said "An what if gettin led aint so bad aye? An whats wrong with havin a God have some interest in you. Better than bein left alone and never doin *anythin* remotely interestin, except hear about the stories of other people who *had* been led and ended up happy." |

"Well, fine then," Jane said, her self-control finally snapping. "Do what you like. I don't care."
Jumping out from the windowseat she turned her back on Larkin and stormed off, vanishing through a doorway on the right hand side of the room. As she left, the door swung shut behind her with a slam.
