Jones was inclined to be convivial. The late hour troubled him not at all, especially with the upsurge in custom. He had drawn himself a draught of dark ale and now saluted the Doctor and Captain Magpie with it. (He had nothig against the pirate captain per se, if anything rather the reverse, but no father can be entirely comfortable about seeing his daughter doting on one.)
"They're all the same size," he offered into the conversation. "The patches... The Cardinal used to say it showed one of the Gods had a tidy mind but I think myself it's a messy sort of arrangement. Lands weren't meant to stack up like boxes or crates." |

Magpie nodded - "seems a crazy way to do things, if you ask me - what use is a nautical mile of ocean, eh?"
"Has the map room always been there? Seems to me for what I've been hearing that there's more patches than there might used to have been. Or different ones anyways... Wonder how long ours'll be part of this."
He took a couple of glasses from the bar for himself and the Doctor, and offered one to Jones too. He poured some very generous measures of rum with that offhand manner that marks a career drinker.
"Has either of you been to the dark place? No lights and a susperstitious bunch, though it sounds like they've got a nice tidy set up there - everything they need."
He threw out questions as the rum slipped down. At the moment what he didn't know could fill the Pacific, and leave enough for a good sized continent on top.
"Oh, and just to check, good Doctor, where were you in the great oceans when you got plucked through to this partickler collection of geographical and sociological oddities? We were somewhere in the Southern Atlantic, but I've a feeling you weren't nearby us. Not within 10 Nauticals anyway."
"'Nother one for you, Mr Jones - how often does this reshuffling occur then? It's been 3 times today, or seems like to me. |

"The map room's been around for a while," Jones said, accepting the drink and leaning against the side of the bar. "But you're right Captain that there's been many more patches than the ones you've encountered."
He lookdd off into the distance for a moment and then continued.
"I think me, that the Gods swap places in and out og the world as it suits them. The rearrangements are a disguise, distracting the attention for the places they've hidden or removed."
Thinking, he added:
"As for the time difference, it's something you get used to. Some places barely seem to change, and others crack along..." He nodded at the doctor. "Your Captain Isobel had visted here three times now, and each vsit she seems to know more. I'm guessing time has run slower in some of the other places she's been."
He rubbed his chin and took another swallow of drink.
"It's a hard thing for a man... or woman... to get his head around. That time itself is a whim of the gods." |

Jones glanced about and then added after a while.
"But speaking of time... It truly is getting late now and we've many visitors staying this night. So, if you'll excuse me I'll see to the other guests and thence to my bed."
He nodded to the Doctor and Captain Magpie and then added.
"I believe you spoke of staying the night here? There's the Master Bedroom still unbooked and the Blue Room. No hurry to decide but if you do intend to stay after hours, I can take the fee in the morning..." |

"No need to wait up on my account," the Doctor said, standing. "Fascinating as this conversation has been, I believe I am in need of rest and since it appears to be night-time here at least, I should like to avail myself of one of your rooms, Mr Jones."
She bowed to Magpie and added.
"Since there is only one of me, I think perhaps the Blue Room will suffice me."
She knew that her Captain might have claimed the largest room on behalf of the dignity of the navy, But she hadn't Isobel's appetite for games of one-upmanship.
"Very well, Doctor," Jones said, handing over the key. "I believe the room has been aired, since my wife realised how many guests we would have tonight."
Holding out the other key to Mapie, he added. "And that leaves the master bedroom for yourself, Captain. There's room for your crew as well but only the one double bed. But you'll find blankets and bedrools in the large linen cupboard at the top of the stairs."
He nodded to them both and held the door open for the Doctor as she followed him out.
[ooc note: The Doctor and Jones have now left this thread. The Doctor will reappear in the next day of game time. She occupies the Blue Room but I will not begin a new thread for her there unless some activity renders it necessary.] |

Captain Magpie finished his drink and tucked the unfinished bottle of rum under his arm before following them through into the public bar.
[ooc note: Magpie now leaves this thread and effectively ends it. A new saloon bar thread will commence the next time the room is entered.] |
