Karl surfaced from sleep to the sound of glasses chinking and clinkiing somewhere downstairs. The light of dawn filtered through the yellow curtains of the room and his eyelids alike so that he opened them to see a haze of yellow surrounding him.

From somewhere downstairs he could smell frying bacon.

A moment of hesitation, as he yawned, rubbed crusty sleep from eyes, and searched out his glasses on the bedside table, and then Karl began to jolt himself awake in earnest.
A brisk wash, towelling down. Rummage in his bag for a trusty cut - throat, then a swift removal of the majority of his stubble.
Clothes on - no change of linen there, sadly. Garters done, tie knotted, suit jacket buttoned, lapels brushed down.
A final check in the mirror, and then he was ready to go downstairs, to meet with the barkeeper, and to initiate what he had no doubt would prove to be yet another succession of random, if remarkable, events and encounters.
Sighing loudly, deleting the final dregs of dream stupor from his mind, he headed down.
