Dr Jewel turned to him.
"Dr Odom made a comment about dragons as he knew them from the stories in his world. It wasn't terribly complimentary but then he didn't know that Kalyndis was a dragon." She said. "And, errr, Kalyndis wants to fight him over it."
She looked to the others for support. |

The entreaties of Dr Jewel and Father Michael stayed Kalyndis. Obviously Odom didn't know about dragons, and if there were none in his world then it was quite understandable that he would not know how to address his betters.
He said to Jones, "This insolent creature insulted my race. I had thought to save his master the effort of teaching him manners, but as we are all guests in your abode, I will not deal with him summarily. I can take him outside if you like -- unless he is one of yours, Jones?" |

Violetta looked up from the table, her face a study in misery. "Oh, Mr. Jones." A drop of gravy fell from her hair onto the surface of the table. "I apologise for my overactive imagination, but it seems to be running a bit riot at the moment. It's possible that at least some of this might actually be happening, but if you're one of the things I'm imagining, my most sincere apologies for putting you in this position."
Hurriedly pulling herself together she stood up once more. It was clear that someone had to take control of the situation immediately, and noblesse oblige and so on. "Mr. Kalyndis, please would you be so kind as to refrain from threatening to kill people. It's extremely rude. Dr. Odom, please apologise to Mr. Kalyndis for demeaning his draconic heritage. That was also extremely rude of you. Dr. Jewel, I don't suppose there's any chance you could put on some respectable clothing is there? I don't mean to cause offence but I'm afraid I find you current mode of dres a little disturbing, and I think it would help me a great deal. Was there anything else? Oh yes, Mr. Jones, could you please provide afternoon tea for everyone present - I think that would enable us all to calm down and continue having a civilised conversation. Here's a five pound note. Will that be enough? Bring a cup for yourself if you would like to join us." The effect of this assertive behaviour was only slightly marred by another drop of gravy falling from Lady Violetta's hair onto the note she was offering to Jones. |

"A Dragon are you, friend?" Jones said slowly. "Well you're right enough that I don't like customers busting up the furniture and it seems to me a Dragon could do a lot of damage."
He paused and then added:
"But if you'll pardon the liberty, sir, it seems there might be a flaw in your reasoning. Where you come from, I'm guessing dragons are a superior race, set over others to rule them, like? Well if this chap's not a dragon and don't know anything about them, he's not going to gain a lot of respect for your people if you tear him limb from limb for what sounds like an accidental mis-speaking. What's more, if he's as lowly and lesser as all that, seems to be you wouldn't to errr... sully your claws with him, so to speak."
"Now if you can't settle this friendly-like, I will have to ask you to leave. But perhaps what's called for here is... another drink, what say you gentlefolk? Another drink and all's well. On the house, whatever you like. I'm sure I have something to tempt any palate, dragon or mortal, or whatever you folks rightly be." |

| Kalyndis nodded. "Your points are cogent, sage Jones. I will take no further action if Odom will curb his tongue." |

Dr. Odom blinked with surprise. Everything seemed to have exploded and he had lost track of it somewhere around the time he had responded to Trubshawe's comment.
There was only one obvious thing to do. He set his beer on the corner of the table and used the free hand to pass his handkerchief to Violetta.
He leaned very close to her and asked, nearly-but-not-quite whispering, "To whom am I meant to apologize? And why?" |

Lady Violetta mopped absently at her hair with the handkerchief as she responded in a sotto voce tone that was probably quite audible to anyone within the bar, and possibly outside. "To Mr. Kalyndis." She waved the handkerchief in Kalyndis' direction. "He's a dragon, you see, a bit like Cow Sheng, I think, except more draconian and less well, bovine. And I think your comments about dragons offended him a bit."
She paused and looked over at Kayndis again, staring him up and down intently for a few seconds before continuing in a more normal (and consequently moderately quieter) tone. "Are you *sure* you're a dragon, Mr. Kalyndis? You really don't appear to have many of the features more usually associated with dragonkind." |

Seeing that his customers appeared to have calmed down Jones nodded to Jessica, who had been quickly preparing drinks since he last spoke. He saw with some concern that Juniper was now helping her again and wondered what had become of Karl, who his daughter-in-law was supposedly looking after. But he had enough to deal with here for the time being.
Cups of green tea and black quaffee were brought to the table by Juniper and Jessica. Jones pulled one of the other tables closer as they did so, to create a long table capable of seating all here present. At the same time Jennifer, his wife, arrived out of the kitchen bearing an immense fruit-cake which she placed at the centre of the table.
Jones looked approving as Jennifer cut the first slice of cake and then left the decorated silver knife beside the pile of small plates.
"Tea and Quaffee are served, ladies and gentleman," the publican said. "Would anyone care for something stronger? Mr Kalyndis, I have an excellent Sanguous Lacrimosa, if you care for something in the spirits line?"
Stepping away from the table, Jones returned to the bar. |
