Kalyndis said with some force, "If you know of a suitable spell, Jones, I'd be delighted to take advantage of it."
He felt excited and at the same time increasingly unhappy. It seemed that not only were these humans wild, some of them wielded talismans of considerable power. (Was that what Violetta had picked up?) And meanwhile, he was stuck in their limiting shape.
Muttering something irritably, he flicked his fingers and sent two fiery crimson darts shooting towards the phantoms. |

Further shots rang out in the night, smearing phantoms through the air, as they suffered under the light of Father Michael's faith.
[i][OOC: I said I shot a wraith earlier. As Trubshawe had discombobulated the wraith, clearly what I shot was a Phantom. As if I know the difference.] |

| "No, no, Mr. Trubshawe, spells. Magic. For example, if I just .... 'giboreth nafale crom!'" Lady Violetta held up her hand and a shining ball of light appeared in it, illuminating the area around them. The good news was that there didn't appear to be any more spirits nearby. The bad news was that there were plenty of other unsavoury things in the vicinity, and now they could see the party. Nonetheless, the light did seem to help a bit. Violetta, however, was quite oblivious to its effect, since she was staring fascinatedly at the light. "Remarkable!" |

"Well done, gentlemen, an impressive victory," Jones was in hte middle of congratulating the party on their success when Lady Violetta's ball of light appeared. He turned to stare at her with surprise.

| Well, really! Kalyndis thought to himself. Is there any human here who doesn't have magic? |

Trubshawe, at his shoulder, was thinking much the same thing. If you asked him the whole situation was getting rather rum.
He found himself gazing at the spot where the wraith was now slowly beginning to recoalesce, and wishing he had proper containment equipment to hand. If push came to shove, it wasn't that far back to the Zoo. He began to calculate the distance and risk involved... |

Lady Violetta looked around apologetically. "Well, I never really realised I could do magic. I mean, I'd always thought it was theoretically possible, but I never found a book that explained it before. Well, expect for that one time when a wizened old tinker sold me a magic book in exchange for a silver teaspoon. That was written in some strange language I couldn't understand though, so I never did find out if it worked.
"Anyway, I thought it had to be worth a try, didn't it? Of course it explains all sorts of things. Does anyone else want a go?" She offered the book around. |

"We came out here to do a job, and the sooner we do it and get back to somewhere protected, the better. Let's get moving."
Angelis made for the cottages.

"Yes, let's hurry," Jessica followed after John Angelis but Jack turned to look over the rest of the party.
Jone had moved up to Lady Violetta and said with a cautioning tone.
"Do be careful with that, my lady, if you've no experience with magic that tome could be a danger to you. Monsters do drop items and I've found many a scroll in the caverns that when read creates a spell. But it's not a power to take lightly..."
Turning to look at the misty shape that appeared to be the Wraith reviving he added:
"And that's not a good sign. Keep chanting, Father, and let's see if we can banish this thing properly."
Swinging his axe powerfully he smeared the misty form into streaks of vapour, having to swing again and again to keep the thing from reforming.
Meanwhile Jack had turned as was looking into the dark night.
"My night vision's gone," he cursed, trying to see past the group of the party. "But I think I see... oh God in Heaven!"
ooc: Jessica follows John A. to 'Cottages: When The Lights Went Out' while those members of the party remaining in the vicinity of the light will now encounter the Ograda (first mentioned in the 'Men at Work' thread. |

Seeing the effects of his prayer had increased Michael's confidence, and on hearing Jones' request he did not hesitate. Having reached the end of his psalm, he held out the crucifix towards the wraith, and boldly began the prayer of exorcism:
Exorcizo te, immundíssime spíritus in nómine Dómini nostri Jesu Christi eradicáre, et effugáre.
Advancing towards the creature, he thrust the crucifix forward once more, and it began to glow:
Recéde ergo in nómine Patris, et Fílii, et Spíritus Sancti: da locum Spirítui Sancto, per hoc signum sanctæ Crucis Jesu Christi Dómini nostri: Qui cum Patre et eódem Spíritu Sancto vivit et regnat Deus, per ómnia sæcula sæculórum.
The crucifix flared briefly, then the glow faded, and with it the last tendrils of the Wraith's shadow body. |

In the clear pure light of Violetta's spell it was possible to make out Michael's final triumph over the Wraith.
Obviously the adventurers could not know what the Wraith thought in those final moments but as it sighted the shambling hulking shape appearing from the darkness that to it was as clear as day a last whisper of a thought crossed its mind, directed at those who had destroyed it:
* pray... *
But prayer was not going to be enough. The Ograda loomed out of the night, already impossibly huge, and growing bigger by the second as it charged towards them. Four times the size of a man, wielding a massive club the size of a tree trunk, it roared a challenge as it came.
The party scattered before it, Jack Jones hurled himself out of its path, Jones attempted a chop with his axe against one giant leg before shouting:
"Back, get back... RUN!"
The club thundered down between Violetta and Trubshawe, scattering the sphere of light, and in the falling shadows lifted again for another strike.
"RUN!" Jones shouted again out of the black night.
ooc: This thread now ends. The party scatters in all directions and members of it should feel free to start their own threads as they decide upon their next actions. You can also join any current threads in this patch (e.g. 'Magpie and Crew in the Darkness' or 'When the Lights Went Out')
The Ograda will continue to charge about and may follow one or more of you into your next threads. Beware the Ograda, it is big and angry and will need to be hacked down by conventional weapons or considerable cunning. Please don't post saying you've killed it unless this has been okayed in advance by a GM. |
