Juniper Jones returned to the public bar in the company of Dr Jewel and Dr Odom. There was a good deal of noise coming from outside and, crossing to the window, she unbarred a shutter and looked out into the darkness.

The darkness was no longer dark. A great gout of fire had recently erupted nearby and a fence and a small shrubbery had been immolated by flame. In the leaping shadows a man could be seen frantically scrabblign out of the way of a vast red dragon.

Dr Jewel joined her at the window.

"Oh no." She said. "That had better be Kalyndis."

She looked at Juniper.

"Supposing we open the door so that people can run straight back in?" She suggested. "Or is it not worth the risk of getting monsters as well?"

"If we guard it, it should be safe enough," Juniper agreed. "And it looks as if there might be injured coming in soon."

Dr Jewel moved over to the door.

"Someone else will have to open it." She said apologetically.

She listened to the noises outside for a moment. The burning sound in particular was worrying.

"If you think it would help I could go out and tell people that the door is open." Jewel offered. "I should be immune to fire and if I meet another of those wraith things, well, at least I might be able to hurt it this time."

She brandished her blade with the air of someone who had once belonged to a fencing club. Possibly.

"Mrs. Jones, may I suggest that Dr. Jewel goes out only so long ahead of us as it takes us to unbar the door, after which we follow, you moving ahead and to the left and I ahead and to the right so that we are unlikely to hit each other if we need to swing our weapons. We can stop there and see who may be coming in, and if we see anything nasty coming I can practice flicking this at it," Dr. Odom said, brandishing the ebony wand. "Anything that gets closer I will do my best to bludgeon. I think it may be best not to plan past that point just yet."

With the mace tucked under his left arm and the wand clenched in his left hand, Dr. Odom set his right to the bar on the door.

Juniper moved to the other side of the door, ready to procede with the plan Dr. Odom had outlined.

"OK, I'll wait on the other side of the door." Dr Jewel nodded.

Then she walked through the door again.

Dr. Odom heaved the bar from the door and switched the mace to his right hand. With a deep breath and a glance at Juniper, he yanked the door open and stepped out.

Juniper followed the doctors out of the bar, holding her flail at the ready. Despite her cool demeanour she was wondering what use her weapon would be against something the size of a dragon.
