| "Hellfire..." Jack cursed, scrambling for his sword. "Where did that come from?" |

"Holy Mother of God!" said Michael, in amazement. "Jack, don't be alarmed, it's the gentleman who was helping you just now. He's shifted his form, that's all.
(That's all, thought Michael to himself, maybe I'm going native...)
Kalyndis, I am mightly impressed. Would you like us to stay with you, or will you hunt more happily alone?" |

The dragon felt something bubbling up inside him that had been suppressed for far too long.
He winked at Michael and Jack.
Then he breathed fire on them. |

'Never deal with a dragon' had been one of the precepts Jack had grown up with. Accordingly, despite Michael's words of reassurance he had been standing ready for combat when the tongue of flame erupted from Kalyndis' maw. As the fire enveloped him he hurled himself out of its path, rolling over and over on the ground to put out the the flames.
As such he was singed and scorched but not actually crisped and he continued to half-roll half-crawl out of the way, while trying to spot what had become of the priest. |

Jack's main aim at present was self-preservation, but while he was fulfilling this he was also able to steal a few glances in Michael's direction. The monk had taken the full force of Kalyndis' flame, so it was with a certain amount of relief that Jack saw no movement from him. It would seem that the force of the blast had proved instantly fatal.
"Oh well," thought Jack, "at least he didn't suffer. Mind you, if his religion had taught him to be sensible, instead of talking to dragons like they were people, he might still be alive."

Dr Jewel arrived in the blaze of light from the fires caused by the dragon flame. She stopped for a moment, gazing up at the creature in awe. Then she moved away from the inn before she drew attention to herself. After all, it would not do to have the others open the door only for a dragon to breathe fire upon them.
"Hello!" She shouted at the dragon as she moved out into the open. "Kalyndis?"
She got ready to dodge flame, planning to run away from the pub itself. After all, this would not be a good time to find out that fire harmed ghosts. |

[OOC: moves from "Bad to Worse"]
As far as dragons went, Dr. Odom had seen bigger. Four of the ones in the Museum were bigger. Much bigger. He had just never seen one alive. But were the others right? Was it Kalyndis? Dr. Odom cocked his wrist, the wand pointed roughly in the dragon's direction, watching for anything that might be interpreted as potentially indicative of intentions on the shady side of overwhelmingly friendly.
"Point and flick," he muttered to himself, "point and flick." |

Juniper Jones followed Doctor Odom out of the pub. In the light of the flickering flames she made out a charred human corpse and her breath caught in her throat for a moment before spotting a figure croached by a tree stump a little further away and recongised it as her husband.
Jack spotted her at the same time as he got to his feet, broadsword at the ready.
"Look out!" he shouted at the newcomers. "It isn't friendly. It just crisped the priest." |

"It's not friendly" registered right away. "The priest" took a little longer.
Priest? Dr. Odom puzzled. What priest? There was Mr. Trubshawe, the fellow inside, the young man in leather . . . Michael? Do they mean Michael? Father Michael! That's what he meant!
Dr. Odom felt like a bit of an idiot. That was nothing compared to what he felt when he looked at the ruined corpse.
"Point and flick!" he half snarled and half muttered. "Point and flick! Point and flick!" He did it as he said it.
Like Juniper had said, the wand would have worked better for a wizard, but Dr. Odom had seen too much in the last couple of days to disbelieve in magic, and his efforts were fueled by anger over the death of the poor man he had brought here. And he was Dr. William Teiresias Odom, heir to the office established by Dr. Peter George Adams, the first Curator General, and the namesake of Dr. William Archibald Turpin, victorious in maintaining the unity of the Museum in the Battle of the Three Curators, and lightning was lightning.
The first bolt was aimed short and vaporized the sap of a shrub, causing the soft wood and leaves to explode outward, and obscuring the results of the other two bolts flying toward the dragon. |

| The dragon had been crouched like a toad atop the Ograda's corpse, watching more humans come out of the dwelling. As Jack got up, he decided it was time to survey his new hunting ground from above. Wings rose, cupped air and swung down as he leapt into the air, rushing over their heads towards the roof of the inn. He seemed almost to be ignoring them until his tail, trailing through the air behind him, lashed down at Dr Odom. |

[ooc: The posts from Odom and Kalyndis don't actively contradict each other. Dr Odom's second and third bolts of lightening hit as Kalyndis is swooping down to eviscerate him...
Good luck... Time in.] |

Dr Jewel raced to the spot where Kalyndis' tail had connected with the ground Dr Odom stood upon.
Cursing her incorporeal state which prevented her from doing more than alerting others that he needed help, she looked around frantically for her travelling companion. |

| If the dragon had been heading straight for Dr Odom, no doubt the lightning would have struck. As it was, the bolts sizzled past the beast as he rose into the air and over the pub. His tail clipped Dr Odom heavily across the chest, sending the man sprawling across the ground to hit the pub wall with a thud. |
