As Jones finished speaking a burst of ugly red flame erupted from the south near the pub and Arnora turned her impassive gaze in that direction, slipping once more into a meditative state.

Glad that the intervention by Jones had prevented the freezing of their lady companion Arnora let her attention drift back to where the fight with the Ograda had been. There now seemed to be something going on involving a dragon and one of the combatants seemed no where in sight.

Looking at the young lady attempt to warm herself Arnora frowned and decided they should concentrate on their own circumstances first.

Arnora Addressed Kao Sheng, "I would think it wise to take our companion here back to the tavern to aid her warming. If you would accompany us there I would be glad to talk to you about recent events?"

She then moved over to offer her assistance to their companion.

"Your wisdom is as clear and constant as the unchanging stars, O sublime Arnora," Kao Sheng replied as he moved to support Lady Violetta. He carefully placed his cloak about her shoulders, this turning out to be a lot more effective at warming away the chill than it appeared to be, before beginning to guide her back towards the inn. Almost as an afterthought he also picked up the fallen spellbook.

"Come, fair Lady Violetta, let us return to the shelter of the Public House, which lies just a short distance away even now," he said gently. "Mister Jones, I do sincerely wish you the best of luck in your quest, and hope that the breach may be sealed without delay."

Lady Violetta shook her head slowly from side to side. "Can't go back. Got to rescue Blackie." So saying she attempted to push herself to her feet, using her arms. She got far enough that most of her body was off the ground before she let out another grunt of pain and fell back to her previous position. She lay, gasping for breath, a look of quiet despair in her eyes.

Leaving Violetta to the tender mercies of Arnora and Kao Sheng, Jones turned and headed north.

With Lady Violetta evidently still unable to stand even with help, Kao Sheng settled for lifting her gently and carrying her towards the pub. Apparently he was a lot stronger than his appearance might have suggested.

"I offer my most sincere assurance that your noble steed is entirely safe and unharmed, and will continue to be so for the immediately forseeable future," he told her softly. "If you would now consent to allow this humble traveller to convey you to a place of safety where you might recover your strength, you would then undoubtedly be in a better position to effect his recovery..."

"Blackie's .... safe?" whispered Lady Violetta, almost inaudible, the last of her energy clearly expended. "You're sure?" Without waiting for an answer, she passed out in Kao Sheng's arms, her face that of a sleeping child, for all the frostburn coating her body. A pin came loose from her hair, causing her long tresses to fall down, completing the image and making the three travellers appear to the casual observer oddly like a family as they returned to Jones'.

As the group approached the main building, it became obvious that All Was Not Well in the area outside the front entrance. Casting a brief look of concern in that direction, Kao Sheng turned his steps towards the kitchen door on the western side of the pub.

Stopping just outside, he managed with careful movements to knock sharply upon the door without, he hoped, disturbing the sleeping Lady Violetta.

After a moment someone could be heard drawing back bolts and a voice asked from inside:
"Who's there?"
Arnora and Kao Sheng both recognised it as belonging to Jennifer Jones, the publican's wife. A moment later another contralto female voice asked:
"Might it be an enemy?"
"Monsters don't knock," Jennifer assured her, preparing to open the door.

Kao Sheng waited with no apparent sign of impatience while the door was opened, but his subsequent manner was uncharacteristically brief.

"O most worthy Mrs. Jones, most sagacious Doctor Domenova," he said, "This courageous maiden requires your immediate attention."

"Oh," Jennifer viewed Kao Sheng with a mixture of surprise and supicion but the Doctor had no such qualms. Reaching out for her patient and taking her limp wrist she gestured at the kitchen table.

"Fainted, has she?" she said. "Bring her in here. Any conditions I should know about. Has this happened before?"

Bwhind her Jennifer paused to let Arnora and Kao Sheng in before shutting the door again.
