"It is unfortunately the case that any truly complete response to the implied queries would indeed very probably begin to resemble a philosophical dissertation within a relatively short time," he said sadly. "Your anger is entirely understandable, and may this offensive individual offer his sincerest apologies for the tribulations you have suffered. He will remove himself from your distinguished presence without further delay.

"Lady Arnora, would you perhaps consent to accompany me? If you will tolerate the company of this one for but a short time, there are some matters of direct relevance to your own circumstances which may benefit from some discussion..."

Lady Violetta looked crestfallen, and all the anger vanished from her manner. "Oh, Mr. Sheng. I'm terribly sorry. I don't find you offensive at all, just rather confusing, and in my current rather battered state, I'm afraid I let my temper get the better of me. Just because you are, er, of foriegn extraction, that doesn't mean that you don't adhere to the dictates of honourable conduct, and you have never given me a single reason to believe that you do not. I have maligned you inexcusably and I hope that you will be able to find it in yourself to pardon my lapse of good manners.

"Please feel free to stay or go as you wish. I shall endeavour to make the best of my situation as doubtless you do yourself. But for now, I think I'll stop talking. It hurts rather a lot."

"Here," said doctor Domenova, taking the bottle of smelling salts away from Lady Violetta and replacing it with a mug from which steam was rising. "Hot sweet tea," she explained.

The bucket brigade had given up on making much impression on the fire from the ground floor and had moved upstairs from where they could be heard nosily combating the burning roof.

Tilting her head to listen, doctor Domeova's face bore an expression of concern. "Here," she said again, and before Violetta could protest had unwrapped her blankets and pulled a rough woollen garment like a working man's jumper over her head.
"Much more practical than your current attire, young lady," the doctor explained. "Now why don't you take that cup of tea into the sunshine and find somewhere to sit down? I'm not entirely convinced this structure is going to hold up and you can give the alarm if you spot the dragon coming back."

Arnora had been sitting quietly for a while now, searching for the dragon in her own way. At Kao Sheng's question she brought her attention back to the tavern. She could hear clatters and urgent talking and there was the smell of smoke. Fire was not something she felt particularly equipped to deal with.

Arnora Turned to kao Sheng, "I do not feel as useful here as I would like to be. I would certainly be interested to hear what you have to say".

Lady Violetta snatched the blankets back from Dr. Domenova, clearly very embarrased. The fact that the jumper rather dwarfed her didn't help very much either. Gathering up the rest of her clothes from the kitchen without comment, her face burning red with the shame of having her underthings exposed to Kao Sheng and being forced into such an undignified garment, she picked up the tea and headed out into the garden. As she left, she turned in the doorway, and coldly polite, thanked Dr. Domenova for the tea.

There was a brief interruption as Lady Violetta returned to the kitchen, picked up her spell book, and walked out again.

Shortly afterwards Jones himself entered at a run, he barely noticed the conversation in the kitchen as he raced through the back, past the storerooms and down towards the cellar.

Kao Sheng, having kept his eyes both closed and averted from the moment when the Doctor first moved to remove the blankets from Lady Violetta, now glanced upward at the disturbing fire-related sounds coming from the roof.

"I fear that this is indeed a situation where the continued presence of this person at least seems likely to result in unfortunate questions, additional recriminations and a general state of social disharmony," he agreed. "If it is permissable, it would seem to be of some benefit to proceed forthwith to a more secure location."

So saying, he stepped over to the door to the storeroom, and opened it. Behind it, unusually, was an opaque veil of mist.

"O fairest Arnora, this person would be most honoured if you would preceed him."

Jones came running back through the kitchen, carrying a pile of short sticks in his arms. Hurrying to join the bucket chain he handed over a stack of these with quick instructions before heading back out the kitchen door.

Arnora checked around the room quickly and then with a smile at Jones followed Kao Sheng's gesture through the door.

Kao Sheng looked momentarily distracted by something as he began to follow Arnora through the door. He continued, however, closing the door behind him. A moment later it opened again and Kao Sheng stepped out of the storeroom, nodded courteously to the Doctor and Jennifer Jones, then departed through the kitchen door.
