Lady Violetta looked up in surprise at the passing Jones, taking the wand automatically. Examining it carefully, she waved it experimentally at the house and added her contribution to that of the others putting out the blaze, which looked as though it were gradually coming under control.

"I don't really think Mr. Jones knows what he's doing," she thought to herself. "I'm almost positive that you can't kill a dragon by squirting water at it. Although it might stop you getting burned to a crisp, I imagine its claws will be just as sharp when it sticks them through you. SHe idly flicked through the spell book. Alighting at random on a page that contained a slow creature spell, she focused her attention upon the distant dragon and spoke the words of the spell. That might at least give those off to tackle the dragon a bit better chance.

Possibly she ought to have given the mechanics of using a wand and a spell at the same time a bit more thought. But Lady Violetta was the kind of person for whom cognition and action were as one, and the words were spoken before she had time to consider whether or not the water wand she was holding might complicate things at all.

The wand was pointed, the spell was sealed...

The world held its breath for a moment. Kao Sheng emerged from the kitchen, reflexively bowed towards Lady Violetta, observed what she had just done and took a couple of steps away before hurrying after the rapidly departing figures of Jones, Doctor Jewel and Doctor Odom. It was probably best to be out of the immediate line of fire.

And then...

Jewel glanced back over her shoulder to check progress on extinguishing the roof of the pub. She realised that Kao Sheng was following Jones and herself.

"Someone else is joining us." She observed to the inn keeper. "It appears to be an oriental gentleman. I think I saw him in the kitchens just a few minutes ago. I hope he has some ideas about how to deal with a dragon."

She thought for a moment.

"If he does he's in a better position than I am." She admitted. "I'm hoping that I'm fire immune and that this blade," she lifted her sword arm for a moment, "might do some damage. Unfortunately it's all theory so far and the practise isn't going to leave me any room for mistakes."

Jewel was trying not to think too hard about Father Michael. About how his encounter with the dragon ahead had most likely been his own first experience of literally fighting evil.

"Don't expect any help from him," Jones said with surprising heat. "The Gods like stirring us up and watching what comes to the boil."

Glancing at Dr Jewel's blade he grinned fiercely.
"That's a Spirit Blade," he said. "Slashes the liife force right out of shadow things. It might not get him in the first jab but in the long-term it'll do for him right enough... get to the heart, if the bastard has one, and keep slashing. That's what I'd do..."

"He's a God?" Jewel nearly stopped with the shock, then forced herself to keep up the pursuit of Dr Odom. "We were looking for a God, earlier. Hoping they mighy be able to tell us what was going on, and why, and... well, everything."

She shot another glance at Kao Sheng.

"Are you saying that they see us as participants in an experiment?"

"They don't see us as people, that's for sure," Jones told her. But he said no more. Ahead of them Dr Odom was nearing the dragon.
