Jewel opened her mouth to ask another question, then closed it again.

"I think I see." She said. "Five gods. Either from the beginning, or possibly you speak of a rebirth of this place. Are those five still here or have some left?"

She stopped again and looked carefully from Dr Odom to Kalyndis.

"Shall we go through?" She said, politely indicating the mist. "I don't mean for my curiosity to hold up our journey."

Dr. Odom turned to give Kalyndis an appraising stare. With what might have been a flicker of a smile he walked calmly backward through the mist.

"I too am curious," Kalyndis said to Dr Jewel. "But no doubt we can continue to pester Kao Sheng with our questions on the other side -- assuming I am still myself." He smiled.

How very interesting. The creators of this place are not of one mind in all things. And Doctor Odom smokes a narcotic? I remember some of the lizardfolk in the jungle would throw certain leaves on their ceremonial fires, and some would catch the smoke in their mouths and blow it out again in imitation of a dragon's breath. Though somehow I doubt Odom would accept that as a possible origin of his ritual.

Pondering various anthropological thoughts, Kalyndis stepped through the mist.

Kao Sheng watched Kalyndis step through the mists, before turning again to Doctor Jewel.

"Please allow your most courteous self to preceed this unworthy one," he said with a bow.

"Thank you." Jewel said with an embarrassed smile.

She stepped through the wall of mist hoping to find both Dr Odom and Kalyndis alive and in human form on the other side.

With a last look around, Kao Sheng followed Doctor Jewel into the mist...

[OOC: Technically, I think Captain Magpie is still in this thread, but it might be best to close this here and start another if required!]

The pirates were indeed the only people remaining at the site of the previous carnage.

Magpie had been patched up, as had the various other pirates who'd either been clattered by the troll or been one of the 'unlucky majority' - those either near or holding a misfired pistol.

Magpie had looked at the dead troll for a time, and removed a gemstone amulet attached to its belt. He summed up his feelings by muttering 'Poor bugger - never knew what him him...'

He returned to the dozen crew members; 'All safe and sound then? Let's get back to the ship'

He stared up at the sun, pulled a large metal compass out of his coat - noticing in passing that the cat had made its way back in there - checked it, then looked at the sun again before examining the compass a second time and shaking it. He nodded, pointed roughly North West and said - 'right - due West is that way, so let's get going'.

His crew followed unfalteringly - they always did. It wasn't that the captain was always right, or even half right, it was that he was forthright.
