"I meant more that England could be scattered across the mists with bits of other places as well." Jewel shrugged. "After all, if some of the Museum is missing then you might find it or your city around here somewhere. As though someone had mixed up lots of different jigsaws together.
"I agree about the incidents. Only Maypole Hill appears to have suffered anything unusual as far as I know. Although, I guess I don't know very far. I've seen the Museum, that inn and now Juniper School and yet I suspect they're a small fraction of the total. After all the Zoo, the Imperial Foundary and the slums of Peerblind must all be here somewhere. |

"Yes, that's . . ." Dr. Odom's answer remained unspoken. He nodded thoughtfully and chewed at his lip, his eyes unfocussed. He turned slowly in a circle, trying to take in landmarks that would help him distinguish this village and its environs from Dr. Jewels or from other similar places they might discover. He hesitated when he saw the mists to the west, darkened by the Museum looming behind, but continued until he was facing the school again.
"Well! Nothing to be gained just standing here!" |

"Yes." Dr Jewel was also keen to move on. "I think we should go back to the Museum and set up another rope. Perhaps to the north this time. Now I know what this place is, I'm eager to see what else lies around us.
"If that's OK with the two of you?" |

Trubshawe nodded. "Until I find the Zoo, I hardly have time to indulge in idle tourism. And if this location is familiar to Dr Jewel as part of her England, we collectively have little to learn here.
"Incidentally, a new theory for you. The three of us are pre-eminent in our fields, zoological, archaeological and curatorial. Is it possible that our abductors - let's not mince words, abduction is what has occurred - have chosen all of us for our educational value, and plan to learn from our work in order to further some sinister agenda? I have seen nothing to contradict this so far - even Larkin Quickgrip could be of sociological interest, as a study in social and cultural deprivation.
"Are these self-styled 'gods' watching us right now, and taking notes? Worth thinking about, anyway." |

"I had, in fact, wondered about a part of your hypothesis. I had noticed that we, ourselves, are in positions of some authority. But might it not be for the benefit of someone such as your new friend George that all of this has been arranged? Perhaps I am superfluous and you and he were destined to meet." Dr. Odom shrugged. "Either suggestion is flawed but worth consideration. Mine does not even necessarily contradict yours.
"Now, though, I think we ought to check for one of those arrow devices and then return to the Museum at best speed as long as we have no other reason to be here." |

"I think we should check the front of the school for the arrow." Dr Jewel started to lead the way. "After all the Museum one was at the entrance and the Maypole Hill one was on the village green. Both in places of prominence.
"The importance of people in this new regime is an interesting thought. One that makes me think I need to pop into the village in the not too distant future. Find out what that basement guard is doing. If anyone in Maypole Hill stands out, it would be him.
"Well, we'll check for the arrow, return to the Museum, finish the ropes and then I'll think about returning."
Dr Jewel increased her speed without consciously realising it. |

Mulling over Dr Odom's words, Trubshawe tried to conceive of a universe where one of his smirking, simian Assistant Zookeepers had a greater part to play in the grand scheme of Destiny than he himself did. No, he shook his head: it wasn't remotely credible.
He quickened his step to match that of Dr Jewel. |
