As the trio arrived back at the misty western edge of Juniper School, Trubshawe was relieved to see that his experiment was still standing. The rope stretched tautly from Odom's flagpole into the fog bank, where it was quickly lost from view.
"The moment of truth, then," said Trubshawe. "Dr Jewel, you suggested that everything may have moved again since we arrived here. Shall we find out?"
He took the rope in one gloved hand and followed it into the mist. |

Dr Jewel looked at the rope, still as they left it.
She followed Trubshawe's lead, but was already confident that the Museum would be on the other side.

Dr. Odom crushed a cigarette under his toe and rested one hand on the marker flag. He would have to get another. He looked up at a passing cloud, thinking that perhaps the sky was a bit less oppressive if he tried to think of it as more of a distant ceiling than a void. It still seemed unnatural, but he would work on it.
Patting the flag and trailing his fingers along the rope, he strode back through the mist.

The caretaker stood up from the tree stump at the edge of the parking area. Many of the parents had left now, and the car park was looking much emptier.
Time to take down the temporary fences, he thought.
Posts stuck into the ground, with rope hanging between them. He began to uproot the posts, rolling the rope up as he went, and folding the orange markers up.
At the edge of the farthest parking area, he found a post on its own. Some kind of flag on the top, but not the usual orange bunting, and a rope attached, but not leading to another post. He peered along the rope, but it wound into the grass and disappeared.
He sighed and tutted about the shoddy work of some of his juniors, pulled up the post, and detached the rope. He then coiled the rope up for a few feet, before flinging it away into the grass to deal with later. |
