"In that case let us move on." Jewel replied, smiling faintly at the comment on admissions. "As there really seems to be an Open Day in progress, Miss Mercury will be extremely busy. Tomorrow or the next day will be more suitable for explanations. Plus I think that arranging for students to visit the Museum would be an excellent idea. Both for study purposes and because it is probable that only a demonstration would convince the head that we were telling the truth."
She set off again to the east, with a brief glance at her companion to check he was indeed accompanying her.
"I would like to come back sometime." She continued, partly to herself. "I am curious about the school, although also slightly afraid of those device things. Mind you, I find it hard to believe that Miss Mercury would be piloting anything too dangerous..."
Her voice trailed off into thought. |

Dr. Odom suspected that Miss Mercury would believe them if they just told her about the shifting landscape about them and the Museum that should be much farther from her school. As long as he could not articulate why, though, he thought he had better not mention it. It was just a feeling, after all, with no evidence to back it up.
He hurried along behind Dr. Jewel, inexorably approaching the eastern mist and beyond it . . . What? The public house? A hundred more alien lands? |

It took about the same amount of time again to reach the eastern edge of the patch. Dr Jewel guessed that the main entrance to the school was roughly central in terms of east and west (although not for north and south). Overall she thought that the distance between mists was three or four miles. Thinking about it, it was the first time, outside of the Museum, that she had walked the length of a patch.
She paused and peered through the mist curiously, hoping for some clue as to what lay beyond.
"It seems to be land." She reported hopefully. "And I think I can see a shadow of a building or two on the other side. There isn't as much in the way of grassland as I remember, but then last time we approached the pub from the east, not the west."
She turned back to her companion.
"Ready?" |

"I can't be more so."
Already fingering paper and a pinch of tobacco, Dr. Odom sauntered forward.

Dr Jewel took a deep breath, or at least tried to, then followed him through.
