In the middle of the night, a man in dark grey clothing walked through the village.

Despite apparently making little attempt at stealth, he went unobserved by the villagers. He stooped and entered one of the huts. A few moments later he emerged again, carefully carrying the still form of the girl Petra.

He left the village and disappeared into the jungle.

The shaman had been out, picking certain flowers that only opened at night. He returned shortly before dawn to discover their mysterious visitor had gone. The fruit and water were untouched. The ways of the forest spirits were mysterious, but there seemed to be no ill omen in this sequence of events -- a malevolent spirit would have eaten the fruit, or left it spoiled. The shaman shrugged stoically. He would mention it to the god of the mountain when he saw him next.

He dismissed it from his mind and sat down in the door of his hut, watching the village wake up to greet the day.
