"So you can draw anything you want to?" Vivi looked at the stream, frothing away through the jungle. "Can you draw a boat?"

"Easy!" said Abigail. She looked at the stream, then got out pencil and paper and started to draw.

"This is a jungle, so we need a sort of dug-out canoe," she muttered to herself, sketching rapidly. Vivi looked over Abigail's shoulder and saw that a brightly coloured canoe was taking shape on the sheet of paper. Patterns of birds and leaves and flowers spread quickly down the canoe's sides, and the ubiquitous Toon-face appeared at its front. Abigail drew in hammocks slung across the canoe's width as seats, and after a moment's thought, she added rather un-canoe-like fins and a tail.

"So we don't have to row!" she said to Vivi. She nodded at the picture, and both girls stepped back as the paper curved and lengthened, and gradually became the boat Abigail had drawn.

Suli was the first to get into the canoe, despite his recent drenching, and the other two followed suit.
"Why does everything you make have eyes?" Tal asked, looking over the front at the canoe's toon face.
"Is that what a Toon is?" Vivi asked, thoughtfully. "Something with eyes?"

"It has eyes because it's alive, silly!" The canoe blinked, and raised its head to smile at Vivi in confirmation of this fact, causing the hammock seats to sway.

"A Toon is... well, it's short for cartoon. Do you have cartoons in Dark Towers? There were these TV programmes where the animals chased each other all the time, and I drew them and then I was one, and I was in Toon Town, and I had the best room in the world, with a climbing frame, and it was a castle, and it was so cool, but then the other worlds arrived, so I went exploring!"

Abigail, evidently believing that this speech adequately answered Vivi's question, climbed into the canoe, and shouted "Off we go!" to it.

There was a splash behind the children as the canoe's tail kicked into action and they started to move down the stream.

Sitting comfortably in the hammocks, Tal and Suli seemed comfortable. Vivi, at the front of the canoe, was preoccupied with wonderings. She was finding it hard to work out what exactly a toon was and a part of her mind was worrying that it might have something to do with the great enemy.

Snark had warned them that the ways of the enemy were devious. You might appear to be dealing with plain and simple magic but then...

It's just drawing things, she told herself. Drawing things and folding up pieces of paper. No one could call that wrong, surely?

Abigail watched the jungle go past, and occasionally called out enthusiastically to the others about something she'd seen.

The boat swam happily along the stream with the children each absorbed in their thoughts, until Abigail cried "Mist!" She tapped the boat on the head, asked it to stop, and turned to the apprentices.

"Can you see the wall of mist?"

"It's all misty here," Tal pointed out.
"Maybe I can," Vivi said uncertainly.
"I'm think it is mistier ahead," Suli said, peering forward. "How strange..."
"Does that mean there's another world across the mist?" Vivi asked.

"Yes, but you really can't see it? OK, you see that tree with the big orange flower hanging out over the stream? The mist starts halfway along the tree behind it. It cuts straight across the stream!"

"I do see it," Suli decided and Tal nodded vigourously.
"I can't see through it if that's what you mean by seeing it," Tal agreed.
"Now that I'm looking at it, I can see it," Vivi said thoughtfully. "But I don't think I'd have noticed it being anything special if you hadn't pointed it out."

Abigail turned back to look at the wall of mist.

"I can see through it!" she declared. "It's all sort of dark land, with sort of weird shapes! Shall we go through?"

The apprentices looked at each other.
"Charms will have started already," Tal said.
"So we've already missed it," Suli replied.
"It would be a pity to come all this way and not see the next world," Vivi said. "Yeah, let's go."

They all looked expectantly at Abigail.

Abigail grinned, tapped the boat on the head again and shouted "Onward!"

The boat swam on, taking the children through the mist.
