The scarabs flew low over the city, clicking and rustling amongst themselves. Their wing
cases had shifted colour to a shimmering, pearly white, making them almost invisible
against the roofline.
A circle, and then another circle crouching above. They knew what they were searching for.
Living flesh would have been better. But any hunt would do...

A swarm of circles, shattered through a thousand facers in their compound eyes. Infinity on its side, or the number eight, scrawled on a wall.
They had found it. Chittering shrilly, they began to descend. Their mandibles were sharp, their posion sacs full. They were ready for whatever lay below... |

The building was ivory white and featureless, much like any other in the labyrinth, distinguished only by the stylised number eight on a plaque in the middle of its single door. The door itself was plain and unmarked, with a single handle and a keyhole in its centre.
A swarm of beetles descended on the door, like the funnel of a miniature tornado. The smallest crammed themselves into the keyhole, trying to squeeze their way through into the space beyond. Others fanned out round the walls, searching for a weakness, a hole, an entrance... |

Frustrated, the scarabs withdrew, settling in the centre of the flat roof with a loud, angry buzzing. Their colours faded swiftly to match the off white of the building's surface, making them almost invisible to the human eye.
They could wait. Eventually, prey would come. It always did. |
