A tall, ice-skinned gentleman in extravagant and lavish clothing stepped through the mists and into the pearly-hued avenues, followed by a shaggy, hairy, doglike form.
"That was a remarkably close call, Ivor. With any luck we'll be distant enough from the schoolhouse that we won't be in any more danger for the time being."
Jack's eye alighted on the mangled, corroded corpse of the 'brownie'.
"Provided," he added, "that this place doesn't have its own dangers." |

As Ivor stepped out of the mists, his left foot fell off.
Whimpering sadly, he picked it up and attempted to stick it back on, without success. Eventually he gave up and tucked it into his backpack, before hopping off in the direction of a strip of grey silk fluttering from a nearby doorway.
Jack Frost could detect a strong scent of decay. |

"Oh, Ivor, really. Look what you've done now-- you've gone and lost your foot. I can't be bringing you back to your master all broken-- what will he think?"
Divination is a strange art, and people can see the future in all manner of places, from the position of tealeaves to the arrangement of entrails of a slaughtered chicken. There are some who say that the babblings of halfwits can be prophetic as well.
"Lilac's going to kill me." said Jack Frost.
The thought passed. Jack spotted the silk, picked it up and thought for a while, before carefully choosing the hall which seemed most Briar-like and capering down it. |

After the strip of silk they found a chunk of black leather, coated in something which Jack felt it best not to investigate too closely. Next they discovered another fragment of silk, and then a strangely human like eye nestling in the centre of a black rose. Jack was uncertain about this last object, but Ivor rushed over to it with yelps of joy, at which point the eye opened and winked at them.
They were making good progress, but Ivor was clearly flagging. At last they came to a wide set of stone stairs, and Ivor collapsed on the first flight. As his body hit the stone there was a soft, pulpy sound, as if someone had dropped a rotten fruit.
Staring at Ivor, Jack could see that his left leg seemed to be... melting.
"Ivor... need master", whispered the dog like creature. "Please... help Ivor... find master?" |

"Blast." said Jack. "Not enough time to find him, and that leg of yours isn't getting any better." He signed. "Don't worry, Ivor, this won't hurt a bit..."
The dog-man was hardly in a state to roll away, but Frost was surprisingly fast anyway as he removed a small, white-hued scepter from inside his tunic and lightly tapped Ivor with the end before placing it.
Ivor seemed surprisingly still as Jack lifted him up bodily and hurried in the direction of the panicked shouting.
