During this time, Karl had walked out into the street outside the building. He had just caught the giant's flight into the air, and seen the flaming scarab swarm dash into the distance, and, he had to admit to himself, that he was thoroughly relieved for the momentary respite. But it appeared that unless something could be done about the theft, the quest might have reached an abrupt, and unlooked for, end. And Karl was not sure that he could accept that. For one thing, he was anxious to know why one of these slabs had appeared to carry a picture of his own City upon it, although he had already begun to formulate suspicions.
'Larkin, I'm glad to see you're safe. Do you have any notion what we can do now?'. Then: 'Jane, are you holding up aright, also?'

[OOC Note: Just to clarify - it was the shelf with nothing on it that was marked with a city in a desert. None of the slabs you have seen have this marking.]

OOC: Since no-one has yet manifested a hitherto unsuspected power of flight and taken off after Doomshadow, he's moving to a new thread: The Dark Lord's Triumph.

[OOC: That is, indeed, a useful clarification for me...even if it isn't for everyone else...suddenly, things make a bit more sense...]

Larkin shook his head and looked rather lost for a second, turning to Karl he began to say "Yer know what, I have no i . . ." when all of a sudden his face turned incredibly thoughtful.

Looking around he suddenly pointed at Rose Briar. "Wait a min. Issit just me or did that Doomshadow bloke seem rather taken with yer? As in if he thought yer was in any trouble would he come and save yer?"

He turned back to the other three. "Do yers see where I'm goin with this?"

"Well, my good sir, I had noticed that he'd been paying Miss Briar a certain amount of attention. But surely that's normal-- he is her Godcousin after all, and presumably wants to look after her."

Jack considered this.

"Wanted, I should say, wanted. He may seem a little odd at the moment, but the man's been absolutely fine for a good while before you met him. It's the work of the Mercury Sorceress, I'm sure of it. We only escaped from her schoolhouse by the narrowest of margins."

"Lilac would never hurt me," Rose said with certainty, Larkin's implication having gone over her head. Still grieved by the loss of her Godcousin and friend she turned to Jack as if to bury herself in his comoforting arms, but recollected in time that this was not sensible.

Turning to Peri instead she leant aganst her, feeling faint from sorrow. As she wept on Peri's shoulder the other woman looked alarmed, exchanging another glance with Jane over the rose maiden's flower-like head. The unicorn lipped at Rose's hair, trying to reassure her in his own way.

Of course while all this was going on, the tentacled beast had made an effective escape. Rose's wailings were only extending the time already lost...

Jane heaved a sigh. Rose seemed to have effectively made herself the centre of attention, even if half the company were simply bemused at her insistance that the tentacled thing was a loving cousin.

"I see where you're going," she muttered to Larkin. "But the thing did just leave her behind. It probably thinks she's as silly as we do. Besides, she's a sort of relation. I don't want to hurt her... at least not much."

Karl considered what Larkin and Jane were saying. 'Let me put the question this way,' he procceded. 'I assume that it's imperative that we get those slabs back somehow...unless that 'thing', decides to complete the quest in our stead, hey?. Larkin, was there anywhere you were required to take the slabs to? Much as I hate the thought of having to tangle with that monster again, might we not make haste, and attempt to head it off?'

"Nah theres no way." Larkin gestured "The things got wings aint he." Larkin then turned and addressed Jane "Don't worry we won't hurt her. We'll just have ter make it seem like we're threatenin her. Then old tentacle face'll come screamin back. Then we just have ter stop him."

Larkin scratched his chin and then said to Peri "You wouldn't happen ter have anyway of stoppin a massive daemon-like thing in its tracks would yer?" Larkin felt into his jacket and then added "An some kinda blade?"

Peri sighed, awkwardly patting Rose's back. "All I've got is my Swiss Army knife. Though it's a really good Swiss Army knife. It's got a blender and a machete and signal flares and a rocket launcher - "

She saw Larkin's face brighten and hastened to add, "But it only launches very small rockets."

Larkin thought for a second and then said "How long's the machete, and this one's really important right, does it look threatenin enuff to cut some poor girls head off?"

Larkin had started pacing up and down slightly by now, he then stopped and said "Looks are gunna be really important now."

He then grinned slightly and said "Rokitt lawncha? How does it work? Could it stop him? At least till we get the slabs back."

Jane was having her doubts about this plan. Horse theft was one thing but kidnapping was another. The rose maiden seemed completely oblivious to their discussion. She had dried her tears and was talking to the unicorn and the horse in a gentle voice, while the man dressed in blue watched her sympathetically.

"I don't think this will work," she said, stepping a little aside to draw Larkin, Peri and Karl with her. "What you going to do? Tie her up and shout that unless he gives us the slabs back we'll kill her? Ten to one he won't even hear us and if he does he won't believe us, and if he does believe us he'll come and send more beetles to attack us."

She shook her head. "I'm not up for any of that," she said. "I was ready to do the job the way Larkin told it, getting the slabs and taking them to the other place. But I don't fancy fighting any more flaming beetles or evil buttercups or those magic brownies he was on about. Not me. And if the rest of you want to go on, I'll say goodbye and go and have a look for this big tree I was told about..."

She smirked. "There's more than one person that wants people to go on quests for her and I met this lady who said she might have a job for me. Since this one seems to be done, I think I might look her up."

Larkins face dropped.

"What yer on about? That Doomshadows got the slabs." Larkin gestured towards the direction he had gone. "I didn't come all this way and get bloody well poisoned just ter go back ter Yarrow and say 'Sorry love, couldn't do it, me team dropped out on me at the first sign of trouble.'"

Larkin nodded towards Rose and said "If it's a stupid idea then thats fine. We'll just go ter the P room and see if he's there, I think I saw it on the way here. Then we'll see if he's gonna do the job fer us. If he does then I'll go back ter Yarrow and tell her what happened. If not then yers can all bog off back ter Jones."

Larkin stepped back and said "Whaddayer say."
