'I agree with you, Larkin,' Karl said. 'It seems important that we see this quest through to the bitter end. I have no wish to endanger my life again, but, on the other hand, I fear what that creature will get up if we are not present to stop him. Whether I trust the Gods who have given this quest to you in the first place is immaterial.'
Karl turned to look appraisingly at Jane. 'I will miss you if you leave us here, Jane,' he said. 'But I am glad that you are finding the freedom to lead your own life. Perhaps I will come and find you again, after this is over.'
'I say we go to this building, and see if the creature is there. And, if so, we confront it. But, do we have any plans as to how we can prevent it getting the upper hand over us this time around?'

"I'm not dropping out at the first sign of trouble," Jane snapped at Larkin. "As I recall I saved your skin once already. But I don't care much for the Gods anyway, they've never done a thing for me. And I don't trust them either."

Turning to Karl she said in deliberately more friendly tones:
"I hope to see you again too," she said. "And next time we meet we can swap stories like proper adventurers. I'll be looking for this tree place called Yggdrasil, so you might be able to ask after me there. Good luck with the Lilac monster." She clasped his hand in a firm grip, shrugged a shoulder at Larkin and nodded to Peri.
"Good to meet you, as well," she said. "See you again, perhaps?"

Tunring her back on Larkin and his companions she stalked back to where she had left Rose, the unicorn, the horse and the man in blue. The strange fellow who had arrived with the frozen statue was still there but of rose maiden, unicorn and horse there was no sign. Only Jane's pack, lying where she had left it after healing Larkin, remained.

Jane stared and then cursed. A look flickered back towards the others as she was perhaps regretting her hasty exit but then she picked up her pack and slung it over a shoulder.
"Bloody horse-stealing vixen..." she was muttering under her breath as she walked away. "Needs looking after, my arse..."

ooc: Jane now leaves this thread and begins a new one in this forum called 'The Start of a Quest'

The rose maiden had not exactly stolen the horse, any more than she'd intended to leave without saying goodbye. But grief for her lost Godcousin had clouded her mind and she barely knew what she did as she put her arms about the unicorn's neck and swung herself onto his slender back.

The black horse on the other hand, knew exactly what he was doing. His first mistress had been odd enough, taking him away from his familiar stable and trekking across some of the most unrestful terrain he'd ever experienced. But his second mistress had led him into a mad place where beetles caught fire and attacked in burning swarms and huge men sprouted wings and buzzed into the sky.

The girl with the red hair had a soft voice and soft hands. The unicorn that accompanied her was to the black horse's unsophisticated mind, like a horse lord or even an equine prince. Either way, when the two of them had slipped away down a side street, the black horse had followed.

ooc note: Rose, Karkadann and The Horse Formally Known as Blackie a.k.a. Buccaneer have left this thread. They will reappear in the Juniper School patch and join the 'Fury Said to a Mouse' thread there.

Apologies to anyone planning to kidnapp Rose but she is a fairytale heroine. They have the damnedest luck...

Larkin had watched the exit of Jane simply open mouthed, and with just a touch of spite shouted at her retreating back "Yeah, thats right, back ter yer daddy. Yer'll forgive me if I don't cry me eyes out with regret." But this was just matched by the stoney response of her retreating back.

Larkin then nudged Karl and with an attempt at a grin said "Hey dyer hear the way she was talkin ter yer?" He then paused and added "Yer well in there mate."

Turning to face the man before he could give a response he said "So dyer still wanna come then? Cos if yer wanna give up an go back to wherever then I'm fine with it yer know. I can go and spy on Doomshadow on me williams."

Karl could not help smiling for a moment at Larkin's bluntness. Then he turned serious again. 'We must do something,' he said. 'My fear is that the creature has already proved itself to be of some mettle, and that we escaped with our lives last time around by a slim margin, and a lot of quick thinking. But there is more to this whole situation than meets the eye, Larkin. I am sure of it. There is something about those slabs that draws me to them...something about all this that seems to run deep...for me, at least. Jones told me something about a Ring of 8, and there are pictures of my home here. It makes very little sense to me yet, but I'd say those slabs need rescuing.' He gave a rueful chuckle. 'Trust an archaelologist to get all worked up over some old pieces of stone.'

'If we're going to this room you suggest, shouldn't we hurry? The thing is no doubt well ahead of us already.'

Larkin shrugged "Let's go then."

He turned and strode off in the direction of the room he had seen earlier, only stopping to call back to Peri "Yer can follow us as well if yer want." He then glanced at the blue fella and his eyebrow went up very slightly before he called "Yer can come as well, whoever yer are."

He then turned back and strode off again.

With the departure of Rose, Jane, Larkin and finally Karl, Peri and Jack were left looking at each other.

"They all left quite quickly, didn't they?" said Peri thoughtfully. Getting a proper look at the newcomer for the first time since he'd arrived with the ice sculpture she added: "So where do you come from, then?"

"Oh, but I forgot to introduce myself." said the figure, setting the frozen figure down. "Jack Frost, Prince of Ice, at your service." he continued, adding an extravagant bow. "Who were your travelling companions? I fear they may do Lilac some harm-- as Rose said, he's not at all himself. Before the whole grisly incident at the schoolhouse he was a perfectly reasonable chap. Still had the armour, of course, and this "- Frost tapped the ice-sculpture - "fellow, Ivor, I think he was called, was following him around."

"Look, I really should be getting poor Ivor back to Lilac. He was terribly upset without his master. And I'm worried about the other two. I'm sure there's some way of fighting whatever enchantment is making Lilac behave like this."

"Prince of Ice?" echoed Peri, wondering if there were any good ski slopes where Jack came from, but thinking it rather inappropriate to ask just yet. "Hey, good to meet you. I've got to say Lilac's the weirdest fairy I've ever met. Though it looks to me as if he's well able to look after himself. I thought fairies were less, y'know, tentacled."

She scratched her head. "Oh. Yeah. I just remembered, I've got stuff to do near here too. I'd better be off. Good luck finding... um, Lilac... and catch you later, I hope. Maybe I could pop into your ice-kingdom some time? After all this quest seriousness some winter sports might be fun."

Waving goodbye, she hurried off in a purposeful manner.

(OOC: Peri moves to a new thread in the Map Room, "Oh, The Places You'll Go!")

Likewise, picking up the frozen statue of Ivor, Frost hurried off on Lilac's trail as fast as his pantalooned legs would carry him.

OOC: Frost moves to The Dark Lord Triumphant
