It seemed to take forever, but in the end his tertiary brain fell silent, heavily concussed by the repeated batterings against the wall.
Doomshadow spread his wings and took to the air. It was time to continue with the plan. To defeat the gods, he would need an army. And where better to look than in the lands he had recently liberated from their oppressors? He was sure the inhabitants would be suitably grateful...
Beneath him he could see a couple of verminous ruffians rolling around in the street. Best to ignore them. As a future god, they were surely beneath his notice.
It was clear, however, that Warble would be a problem. As he flew west, he considered the matter carefully. And, as he approached the wall of mist, the perfect answer came to him. Warble was attempting to take control of Doomshadow. Therefore, in order to defeat him, he must pretend to be someone else...

Larkin watched the dark lord fly off into the mist and muttered to himself "Well, that's that then."
He then turned to answer Karl, but found that he could only shrug. What with one thing and another Larkin realised that he had been spending quite a lot of time following this quest, and now that it was finished (albeit not by him) he was at a bit of a loss. The loss of his blade was a bit of a kick in the teeth but he guessed that Yarrow could probably set him up with a new and better one, even if it wouldn't be the one he had grown up with.
That was when he realised that they should probably go and find Yarrow for his and Karls reward and that was exactly what he said. He did however add "But yer know we're definately gonna see that Lilac or Doomshadow or whatever again." |

| Meanwhile, the tennisball had taken advantage of the confusion to push the door to the "P" room shut. It then spooled some string out from itself and split into two halves. One half then winched the other up to take a look at the controls. |

[ooc: From 'Smight arrives']
As Karl and Larkin stood together outside the now shut P room, there was a tramping sound, of people marching. Turning to look, they saw one massive man, nine foot tall, followed by ten others. All were wearing red armour and carrying huge serrated swords.
The leader had two of these, strapped across his back, and his gaze fixed on the two men ahead.
"You men!" he shouted out. "Where is Karl Groever? I demand to know." |

Larkin was first to react, his normal senses of self-preservation thrown out the window he called back "Who wants ter know?" Larkin hoped that Karl would click to the fact that giant men in red armour didn't often go searching for people to give them hugs and cuddles, or anything good at all in fact. It was all too often that they just wanted to cut your head off.
He tried to convey this to Karl with a vague stare in his direction. |

Karl had no idea what he could have done to have set this party on his trail. He wondered momentarily if perhaps Jones had mentioned the aim of the quest to the figure standing before Larkin and himself; certainly, this universe of so many intersecting realities has already shown itself to containe a multitude of inidviduals. But he was catching the slighest hint in the huge man's voice: the suggestion that he already knew Karl Groever. And that was blatantly impossible, for they had never met before. Jones's mysterious words about knowing Karl began to re - echo in his mind.
He walked further into the huge man's line of vision. 'Yes, sir,' he echoed Larkin 'Announce yourself to us...I have the honour of the name Karl Groever.' |

The immense man looked from Larkin to Karl and frowned.
"You have his name?" he said to Karl, looking threatening. Then his expression cleared and he boomed out his sudden comprehension: "Then you are Karl Groever!"
"It is I. Smight. The Unbeliever. I am here to rescue you Karl Groever because you are weak and I am strong."
He pointed to the men behind him.
"These are my men. We have come from the Red Fort, through the pious place of priests, to help you Karl Groever."
Smight paused. He was obviously thinking. It took a while.
"What help do you need?" he asked. "Karl Groever," he added. |

'Help in working out why you have come to rescue me...Smight,' Karl replied, uncertainly. He looked askance at Larkin a moment. 'Larkin,' he said 'you've travelled around to some extent. Have you heard of this place of priests or the Red Fort?'.
Karl turned his attention back towards the towering figure, and his fearsome escort. 'Have you come to seek me of your own accord? Or has somebody sent you to find me out? Jones, the innkeeper, perhaps. I left a note telling him where we were headed.'
Then another though struck him: 'And this Red Fort...Larkin, was there not something of the sort placed on one of those slabs the mad giant stole?'. |

OOC: Frost arrives from The End of a Quest
Hurried footsteps again. The blue-skinned prince came rushing in, still carrying that odd-looking ice statue. As he saw the ten armoured men, he skidded to a halt and sucked in air, speaking between breaths.
"I followed -gasp- Lilac's trail here. Where did -gasp- dear Lilac get to? -gasp- I have to get -gasp- Ivor here to him, the -gasp- poor fellow needs his -gasp- master."
A few more deep breaths and Frost was on his feet again. He turned to the huge armoured general.
"I don't believe we've had the pleasure. Jack Frost, Prince of Ice. My, there do seem to be unaccountably many armoured men around these days." |

Larkin shrugged at Karl "Never heard of either, but there was a priesty lookin bloke back in Jones' if yer remember." He thought for a second and then added "But yer right about the slabs, there was a Red Fort. Dyer reckon it has somethin ter do with it?"
As the Prince of Ice ran up to the group Larkin pointed towards the mist through which the flying monster had left and said "He went that way after destroyin the wall." Larkin gestured towards the pile of stones "With his head." |

Smight frowned at Karl's questions, frowned again at the precipitous arrival of Frost and mightily so at the explanation of Larkin.
He had found Karl Groever and that should have pleased him but now he seemed to have become mired in meaningless babble. Smight disliked conversations he could not understand, partly because there seemed to be so many of them.
He disliked babble almost as much as books - both came with priests. But a thought was occuring to him slowly. Perhaps some of these people were wizards. Wizards babbled meaninglessly as well but wizards, to Smight's way of thinking were allowable - even if their clothing was worryingly womanish.
Obviously he was going to have to make the situation clear to these people before they babbled themselves hoarse.
"No one sends Smight," he boomed. "He sends others. Legions do the bidding of Smight."
"I came to rescue you, Karl Groever, because the man who is called the Cardinal said you needed help. I took a God Thing prisoner and made it do my bidding."
Smight turned his head to look around and see what had become of the grey dog. But it hadn't followed him down the street. He paused, there were some things it was better to know for certain.
"Smight despises gods and priests and temples all. I spit upon them."
He spat on the ground and the ten armed men followed suit.
"Now tell me if you believe in such things or face the wrath of Smight!"
His menacing manner made it more than clear what the correct answer was to his question. |

Larkins brow wrinkled ever so slightly as he had been following the explanation and he said "If yer really despise gods and priests and stuff like that, then why are you followin advice from this Cardinal fella? How does he know that Karl was in danger? Cos as yer can see he aint now."
He scratched the back of his neck and deciding to push his luck he added "An if yer don't believe in Gods, then how come yer can take a God-Thing prisoner? I woulda thought that takin one as a prisoner should be enough ter prove that Gods exist."
Larkin glanced at Karl and added "right?" |

Jack has been intrigued by Smight when he first saw him. But the fellow was boorish, rude, and disturbingly well-armed.
Besides, he had the information he needed now. He attempted to sidle discreetly out of the room.
Jack had never had the need or the inclination to sidle or be discreet, so his attempt at stealth naturally failed abortively.

Smight ground his teeth, the sound was unpleasant. He chose to ignore the rat-faced man's comments about the Cardinal. It was not for lesser beings to know of the allegiances between the powerful. And his alliance with the Cardinal was something Smight preferred not to think about too closely.
"A God Thing is a creature that claims to be a god," he rumbled. "Smight does not accept such claims. Only fools believe them."
Watching as the man in blue attempted to sneak away, Smight looked at Karl.
"Is that man a priest that he attempts to flee? If he is, I shall follow and slay him."
At the sound of this pronouncement, Jack abandoned subtlety for speed. |

Subtlety had never much been Jack's style anyway. Quick as the crack spreading on thin ice, he darted out of the door and was away down the empty street at top speed.
OOC: Now Frost really does move to Juniper School. |
