The beetle lurched along with the unswerving determination of the incredibly stupid. It mechanically corrected its course after every step so that it continued in a straight line, almost consistently four inches from the wall.
When the wall stopped the beetle did not. It continued in a straight line, under a table and between shelves filled with books. It bore straight between the shelves and past their ends to a clear strip, about five feet wide, between the ends of the shelves and another wall.
It hit the wall. Its legs kept moving as if it was trying either to climb up or through the wall. When it fell over it righted itself and tried again. |

| "Dark Lord Smash!", snarled Doomshadow, and began tearing the wall apart with his bare tentacles. He would punish these insolent bricks for daring to stand in his way... |

Lord Doomshadow's burst of rage served him well against the unflappable, calm resistance of the wall. Paint and plaster and wainscoting and more gave way faster than they had when Lord Doomshadow had entered. Unfortunately, nobody was around to witness this stunning display of force.
A final assault sent a burst of bricks outward and shoved an inconvenient metal bar out of the way. A rush of cool air greeted Lord Doomshadow.
About three feet in front of him was the mist. |
