Smight awoke on the training ground. Regaining his feet he stared around him and saw his army arranged around and about the ground. The sentries manned the towers, the legions were performing manoeuvres around the ground, the servitors were running errands across the fortification.

Smight frowned.
"Something is not right," he said, thinking aloud as was his habit. "I am not pleased."
Around him members of the army stiffened their sinews. If Smight wasn't pleased it was likely that someone was about to suffer.
"Something is wrong," Smight spoke again. He looked around at the legions and added: "This is not as it was. These people died. I sent them to their death and here they stand. Why do my armies live again?"

There was no one to answer him. Smight thought about the problems he had identified. Time passed. The legions watched him warily.
"I do not know what has happened," Smight decided.
The legions trembled.
Time passed.

"I must find out what has happened," Smight declared. "Legions! Attend me."

Some time later the air thundered with a powerful tramping of feet as a legion marched out with Smight at its head, marching west.

***

The legion marched west for five minutes and reached a opaque wall of mist. Smight thundered forward into the mist and came to a jarring halt.
"Unpassable!" he boomed. "Legion, turn right!"

The legion turned north and marched for a while until they reached another wall of mist. This time the mist could be seen through. There was an ocean visible on the other side.
"Ten men, step forward," thundered Smight. Ten men as massive as he was threw themselves into the mist and fell back.
Smight frowned.
"I shall not cross here," he decided. "Legion, turn right."

The legion turned and marched east.

The legion marched east for some time until it encountered another veil of mist and another ocean. Smight frowned mightily at this. Again he ordered ten men to step forward, again they floundered in the mist, again he decided not to pass.

The legion marched south.

At the southern edge the legion halted and Smight looked through the veil to see a golden city.
"I will pass here," he decided. "Ten men, follow me. The rest of the legion, return to the fort."

The legion was composed of foot-soldiers but Smight was mounted on a huge red destrier. Galloping foward he rode into the mist, ten men charged after him.
