"Von Damme" said the man "Erik Von Damme." He said it with the air of someone who expects his name to be recognised, but with a hint of self-deprecation which suggested he knew that would not be the case today.
"First, your milk." He pressed a button on his wrist, and presently, a small wheeled robot, built around a gyroscope, whizzed out of a small door near the rear of the cabin, and trundled around the group, serving drinks. Von Damme received a black coffee in a glass cup. The robot scooted away, back into its compartment.
"And now, south." Another press of a button brought to life a humanoid robot who was sitting in the co-pilot seat.
Von Damme had no great expectation that this strange little man knew anything useful, or even where his zoo was, but at the very least, he thought he would get clear of the thorn bushes before he kicked him out. Von Damme was not a cruel man. |

But this Von Damme seemed to be a thoroughly cultured and charming individual for a change.
The mist bank loomed up before them all, and Daltrey waited to see what unguessable vista they would be presented with next. |

It seemed that whatever else the half-bearded oddity might be, at least he was quiet. Von Damme could not bear the prattle of lesser minds, and in his view a quiet henchman was a good henchman.
The balloon passed through one of the unusually irregular fog banks, and out into a new patch...
