Finding a central street, the man took a brass plaque with arrow marked on the surface from a pocket. From another pocket he removed a tool with which he firmed attached the plaque to a wall such that the arrow pointed to the west. After testing the plaque to make sure that it was not easily removable, he turned and walked towards the city gates.
