The large brown dog leant his ladder up against the house on top of which the black and white cat was hiding, and began to climb with an expression of gleeful anticipation on his face. As he reached the top, the cat jumped over him and landed on the top rung of the ladder.

All four cat paws clung desparately to the top rung as the ladder began to lean slowly away from the house. Some movement of the cat shifted the balance, and the ladder began to lean back in again, with the dog waiting eagerly on the roof edge, forepaws held out to catch the cat. The cat swung back into reach, but the dog was too slow, paws closing on empty air as the ladder swung the cat once more out of his way. This continued for several minutes, the dog always narrowly missing the cat, and the ladder never quite overbalancing...

...when an out-of-control pumpkin carriage, drawn by a mismatched assortment of horses and donkeys, careered into the bottom of the ladder, knocking it over, catching the cat on top of the pumpkin, and heading off on a zig-zaggy course at high speed, leaving the dog stranded on top of the house.
