Lady Violetta nodded enthusiastically at Kalyndis' words. "I'm sure that no malice was intended, even if things are a little difficult to understand. Would you like to join us in finding Mr. Jones? We're also looking for a cow called Sheng, presumably a talking cow because otherwise communication might prove tricky. Not that I've ever seen a talking cow, but it seems as though anything might be possible in this, erm, places."

"A talking cow?" Trubshawe stroked his jaw thoughtfully. "I'd certainly be interested in that.

"But as for this notion that our situation is some sort of accident or game, I'm sorry to be blunt but - simple childish naivete! A collection of individuals of rank and value are plucked from their everyday lives and held captive together, and this is not a kidnapping but a mischance? These persons are trapped in a maze of misty barriers specifically designed to disorient and confuse them, and this is not malice but a splendid joke? Excuse me while I snort derisively."

He did so.

"I think I have come across Jones - I believe he manages the inn I spoke of earlier. On appearances it didn't seem likely that anyone could get anything more useful out of him than watered-down beer, but I'm starting to think this was a front. I shouldn't be surprised if our kindly publican turns out to be in cahoots with our abductors, or possibly even their ringleader.

"But yes, gathering information about our surroundings from all available sources does seem to be our best course of action at the moment. In fact I was already engaged in doing so, with my two doctorly companions."

He seemed to realise for the first time that Jewel and Odom were no longer with him. "Where have they gotten to anyway? They were here a moment ago!"[/i]

By this time, our three protagonists, all apparently in very different worlds despite their sharing of the same approximate spaciotemporal locus, arrived back at the turnstile. "I'm not very important I'm afraid, Mr. Trubshawe, but it's possible that your hypothetical nefarious entities were after my father, I suppose."

Blackie inquistiively nibbled at a piece of paper that had been wedged into the metal apparatus. With some care, Lady Violetta extracted the note from the mouth of her horse, who seemed perhaps a little put out. Violetta patted him reassuringly as she tried to make some sense of the now rather damp and dog-eared note. "Erm, this appears to have been some sort of letter. If looks as though your companions have headed off in the direction of Mr. Jones establishment also, it seems like the social centre of this place, at least if one of your companions is called Dr. William Od... I'm afraid Blackie appears to have eaten the rest of his name. I do hope he won't mind. What an interesting adventure this is proving to be. I have to confess it was getting a little lonely. I think it would be very pleasant to travel to the inn together and see if we can find Dr. Odd. Are you amenable, Mr. Kalyndis? Mr. Trubshawe? Or do you have responsibilities to attend to at your zoo first?"

Kalyndis grinned. "I would be delighted to join you! A talking cow is not to be missed."

He turned to Trubshawe. "Head Zookeeper Trubshawe, I gather the elders of your native territory must be somewhat less eccentric than those of my homeland. My ancestors have been known to turn rivers backwards and set mountains upside down for a bit of fun. Although I cannot recall anything being done on quite this scale--" he waved in the direction of the mist -- "the current arrangement would be in accordance with such personalities. It seems quite possible that this is an elaborate geographical riddle, and our captivity will be ended once the riddle is solved. Besides, what power could seriously threaten those such as we?"

"What's this?" cried Trubshawe, aghast. He snatched the note from Lady Violetta's fingers and swiftly read it for himself.

"I knew it! That knave, that satyr! That he had designs on that poor girl was obvious from the start, and now, the moment my back is turned, he spirits her away to some gaudy lovenest where he can work his oily seductions unopposed."

His moustache bristling with righteous ire, Trubshawe ripped up the note and tossed the pieces to the wind.

"Yes, you're right, the tavern is likely we're they'll be headed - he'll want to ply her with drink, it's probably his only real chance with a woman. We should head there without delay. East you say? I'll take your word for it. One thing though, we'll need to take a rope with us. Physically tying places together seems to be the only way of stopping them from sneaking off when you aren't watching them. Daltrey!" - he cuffed the Assistant Zookeeper smartly around the ear - "fetch a stout coil of rope right this moment. We have a public house to visit and a maiden to save!"
