Kerya

From PatchworkWiki

Geography

This region is covered by high, cool broadleaf forest. The area is usually shrouded in thick mists, and although the air is often cool, it is extremely humid. Bird calls and animal cries are frequent. Overall, the land slopes down from west to east, and is covered in little rises and valleys. There are three principal hills -- one in each of the western corners and one (the highest) in the centre. A deep lake lies between the three hills. Smaller pools and rivers are scattered throughout the patch.

The terrain and ecology is very much like that of the cloud forests on the eastern slopes of the northern Andes (Cordillera Oriental), where the mountains drop down towards the Amazon basin. Any plants or animals found there may have similar or identical counterparts here. Birds, frogs, lizards and insects are particularly abundant, as well as a tremendous variety of epiphytes (mosses, lichens, orchids etc.). The size of the patch means that not all species in the region are necessarily represented, and at any given time there are probably, at most, one or two large predators (such as a jaguar, bear, caiman or anaconda) in the patch.

There are two significant differences from the equivalent Andean ecosystem: the dragon and the lizardfolk. The dragon is a largely unseen observer and, more or less, owner of the patch. The lizardfolk are the local hunter-gatherers, reptilian humanoids with scaled green-grey hides, heavy-jawed heads and thick tails; they are shorter and stockier than humans, and look vaguely like bipedal crocodiles.

Inhabitants

Kalyndis is the sole Dragon inhabitant of the patch. There is also a tribe of Lizardfolk living in the village of Kerya.
